Everton Women were defeated 2-1 by London City Lionesses in the Women's Super League on Sunday. The loss at the CopperJax Community Stadium leaves Scott Phelan's side fifth in the table with nine points from their opening five matches, a record of three wins and two losses that sees them six points behind the leaders, Manchester City Women.

London City took the lead midway through the first half when Delphine Cascarino found the net from a Danielle van de Donk pass. The hosts doubled their advantage ten minutes later as Freya Godfrey scored, assisted by Grace Geyoro. Everton pulled a goal back in the 71st minute through Hannah Cain, who finished from a Holly McNamara delivery, but they could not find an equaliser.

The result halts the momentum from Everton's last league outing, a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City before the international break where Ruby Mace scored twice. Mace, the team's top scorer with two goals in five appearances this season, was unable to add to her tally in this contest. Everton's form now reads three wins and two losses from their first five games, with four goals scored and four conceded, giving them a goal difference of zero. Their recent sequence of results, in chronological order, is a win over Charlton Athletic, a win at West Ham, a win over Birmingham City, a loss to Liverpool, a win over Birmingham City, and this latest defeat.

Manager Scott Phelan will have choices to make regarding his forward line ahead of the next match. The team now prepares for a home fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday 25 October. Everton will be looking to bounce back and maintain their perfect home record this season at Goodison Park against a Villa side currently 13th in the table.
