Everton Women have made the significant decision to sack manager Brian Sørensen as the club finds itself languishing near the bottom of the Women's Super League (WSL) table. Despite securing their first home victory of the season at Goodison Park just last weekend, the club's overall performance has not met expectations, prompting a change in leadership. Sørensen, who took charge in 2022, leaves the club after a series of disappointing results, including six consecutive home league defeats this season.

The club's chief executive, Angus Kinnear, emphasized the need for a change in direction to ensure the team's progression on the pitch. Under Sørensen's management, Everton Women finished sixth in the 2022-23 season but have struggled to replicate that success, resulting in back-to-back eighth-place finishes in subsequent seasons. The assistant coaches, Stephen Neligan and Ashley Tootle, have also departed alongside Sørensen.

Scott Phelan, the Under-18s coach, has been appointed as interim manager for the remainder of the season, with the aim of stabilizing the team and improving their league standing. Phelan, a former England youth international and Everton academy product, has extensive coaching experience within the club's youth system. His first match in charge will be against London City Lionesses, followed by a crucial home game against West Ham.

Sørensen's tenure began with promise, having previously led Fortuna Hjørring to Women's Champions League qualification. However, the mounting pressure from poor performances at Goodison Park ultimately led to his dismissal. The club will now look to rebuild and regain its competitive edge in the WSL as they navigate the remainder of the season.
